GLOBAL STUDIES II
SPRING 2008
As an essential part of this course you will prepare a portfolio of various items requiring independent research. These portfolio assignments will make up 25% of your class average.
1. TERRORISM (10 Points)
Ïcreate a TIME LINE from 1960 - Present with graphics, charts, pictures, etc… showing:
a. at least 1 specific Terrorist Act per Decade
b. a 3-5 sentence description of each act (Who, What, Where, Why)
The Time Line should be aesthetically pleasing (interesting to look at), well organized and colorful. Make it large enough to be easily read. Part of your grade depends on this!
Ïfind 3 NEWS ARTICLES from the
- read each article and type a 50 – 75 word analysis of each article
- turn in a copy of each article with analysis attached at the end of the article
- include the source for each article
- create a booklet with all 3 articles together; include a Title Page as a cover sheet: Your Name

Ïtype a 1 PAGE PAPER about a specific Terrorist or Terrorist Organization.
Include:
- Title / Bibliography Pages
- Specific, pertinent information about the person or group
2. PERSONAL AD (10 Points)
Ïcreate a PERSONAL AD for 2 famous historical figures as it might appear on a site such as Cupid.com. Use Personal Ad / Outline format, NOT paragraph form!
- assume the role of the Historical Figures
- include at least 5 accurate details about each person
- include a picture of each person
- 100 - 150 words
- present in poster format to be displayed on wall
*Try to make this humorous, but remember to use accurate information
*Choose from the following list:

3. REFUGEES (10 Points)
Ïcreate a POWER POINT presentation of events related to Refugees from the past 50 years. You should include:
- minimum of 15 slides (plus a Title slide and Bibliography slide)
- A general definition of Refugees
- Specific examples of where they originate
- Reasons for becoming Refugees
- Numbers of Refugees
- Where they seek asylum
- Countries/organizations providing assistance
- choose a specific group of Refugees and describe their situation
Examples: Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Serbia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Vietnam.
*You may work with a partner on this project and make a 5 – 10 minute presentation to the class using the Power Point as a supplemental resource
*Power Point should include graphs, charts, pictures, etc… to reinforce your information.
4. ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS TENSIONS (10 Points)
ÏCreate a POSTER which includes:
- a definition for Ethnic and/or Religious Tensions
- at least one map of a specific country/region affected by Ethnic / Religious Tension (it should show the groups involved)
- attach 2 News Articles about the specific problem with a 30 – 50 word analysis of each article
examples: Northern Ireland, Balkans, Indonesian Christians, East Timor, China-Tibet, India-Pakistan.
Ïcreate a TIME LINE showing major events related to the issue. Include:
- pictures, graphs, charts, etc…
- at least 3 other worldwide events that occurred during the Time Line dates
Ïtype a 1 PAGE PAPER about your chosen Poster/Time Line topic:
- explain position of opposing sides
- who, what, when, where, why
- major Events
- results
Include a Title Page: Name

5. POST-COLD WAR “HOT SPOTS” (10 Points)
Ïcreate a POWER POINT presentation that includes:
- minimum of 15 slides (plus a Title slide and Bibliography slide)
- discuss the Causes, Specific Events related to the issue, Results, and the Present Status of the situation
- use maps, graphics, pictures, etc… to enhance the project
- you may work with a partner on this project
- you must make a 5 – 10 minute presentation to the class using the Power Point as a supplemental resource
Choose from the following topics:
The Middle East (Arab-Israeli conflict), North Korea, China, India/Pakistan, Afghanistan (Taliban), Iraq, Chechnya, former Yugoslavia
6. RESUME (10 Points)
Ïcreate a RESUME for an important historical figure. Assume the role of the person and include in proper Resume format:
- Objective (job applying for/historical importance of person)
- Education
- Work Experience
- Awards/Achievements
- Personal Interests
This must be presented with a Cover Letter that includes a picture of the person
Choose from the following list:

7. TOUR GUIDE (20 Points)
ÏDesign a TOUR (a minimum of 7 days) of the religious, architectural, historical and/or archaeological sites, and natural attractions of your selected United Nations country. This tour must be presented in a hard cover binder and include the following:
a. at least 3 accurate maps of the country and cities visited
b. a daily diary of places to visit with a brief description of each
c. description of modes of transportation (include a flight itinerary)
d. names of hotels and restaurants
e. description of local norms, customs, and etiquette
f. pictures of places visited and of the country in general
g. an accurate homemade passport
h. any other information that might enhance your tour
8. SCRAPBOOK (20 Points)
ÏCreate a SCRAPBOOK of materials/information on your chosen United Nations country
Scrapbooks must contain the following:
a. Summary of Nation (2 typed pages)
a) Geography
b) Culture
c) Government
d) Economy
*include a Title Page and a Bibliography Page
b. 3 News Articles about your chosen nation from the past year
(newspapers, magazines, etc..)
*include a written, detailed description of each article
c. A handmade flag of your country (Use your imagination/Be creative!!!)
*ALSO, a picture of your country's flag.
d. A world map showing your nation in relation to the rest of the world, a regional map (continent), and an individual map of your country.
e. Complete and include the Information Organizer sheet provided by me.
f. Extra information to enhance the project. (Recipes, pictures, national anthem, items of cultural interest, etc…)
The Scrapbook must be organized in a hard cover binder
