GLOBAL STUDIES 1

SPRING 2008

As an essential part of this course you will prepare a portfolio of various items requiring independent research. These assignments will make up 25% of your class average. 

      1. OVERPOPULATION (10 Points)

   Ïcreate a POSTER with graphics, charts, pictures, etc… showing:

  a. World Population

      b. Top 20 most populated countries of the world

      c. Population Growth Rates for the major Continents/Regions of the World

  1. What factors contribute to the world’s population growth
  2. Why do countries want to achieve Zero PGR% (Population Growth Rate)?
  3. What are 3 problems created by Overpopulation?
  4. What a specific country is doing to limit PGR.

      Ïfind 3 NEWS ARTICLES from the past year about Overpopulation in the World  

  1. read each article and type a 50 – 75 word analysis of each article
  2. turn in a copy of each article with analysis attached at the end of the article
  3. include the source for each article
  4. create a booklet with all 3 articles together; include a Title Page as a cover sheet:   Your Name

The posters should be aesthetically pleasing (interesting to look at), well organized and colorful. Part of your grade depends on this!

      2. APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA (10 Points)

      Ïcreate a TIME LINE of events related to Apartheid in South Africa from 1940 – 2000

  1. Time Line should be organized by Decade (40’s, 50’s, 60’s, etc…)
  2. include at least 2 Apartheid-related events for each decade
  3. include at least 2 worldwide events for each decade

d. The Time Line should include pictures that correspond with the events

ÏType a 1 Page BIOGRAPHY about each of the following:

                  Bishop Desmond Tutu

                  F. W. DeKlerk

For each Biography, include: date of birth, education, occupation, and at least 3 reasons why this person is an important historical figure.

      3. WANTED POSTER (10 Points)

Ïcreate a WANTED POSTER for 2 famous historical figures as it might appear in the “Old West”. Requirements:

  1. include at least 5 accurate details about each person
  2. include a picture of each person
  3. 100 - 150 words - avoid using paragraph form
  1. make it look “authentic”

4. NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION (10 Points)

ÏCreate a POSTER which includes a definition for Nuclear Proliferation as well as Graphics showing:

  1. countries that have Nuclear Weapons
  2. countries that had but no longer have them
  3. countries that have the ability to make them

Ïcreate a TIME LINE by Decade beginning with the creation of Atomic/Nuclear Weapons to the Present. Include:

  1. important people
  2. tests/war-time use
  3. Bans/Treaties limiting Nuclear Weapons
  4. Some decades may have many more events than others

Ïtype a 1 PAGE PAPER about ONE of these topics:

  1. India and Pakistan
  2. North Korea
  3. Iran

Discuss the Causes, Major Events, and Results/Actions taken regarding the chosen topic.

Include a Title Page: Name

5. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS (10 Points)

Ïcreate a POWER POINT presentation that includes:

  1. minimum of 15 slides (plus a Title slide and Bibliography slide)
  2. choose from the following topics:

      Acid Rain  Desertification

      Toxic Waste  Chernobyl

      Greenhouse Effect Water Pollution

      Deforestation  Air Pollution

  1. discuss the Causes, Specific Events related to the issue, Results, and the Present Status of the situation
  2. you may work with a partner on this project
  3. you must make a 5 – 10 minute presentation to the class using the Power Point as a supplemental resource

      6. RESUME (10 Points)

Ïcreate a RESUME for 2 important historical figures. Assume the role of each person and include in proper Resume format:

  1. Objective (job applying for/historical importance of person)
  2. Education
  3. Work Experience
  4. Awards/Achievements
  5. Personal Interests

This must be presented with a Cover Letter that includes a picture of each person.

Use the Personal Ad list, but choose different people for this project.

You should try to make this humorous while still being historically accurate.

      7. TOUR GUIDE (20 Points)

ÏDesign a TOUR (a minimum of 7 days) of the religious, architectural, historical and/or archaeological sites, and natural attractions of your selected United Nations country. This tour must be presented in a hard cover binder and include the following:

      a. at least 3 accurate maps of the country and cities visited

      b. a daily diary of places to visit with a brief description of each

      c. description of modes of transportation (include a flight itinerary)

      d. names of hotels and restaurants

e. description of local norms, customs, and etiquette

f. pictures of places visited and of the country in general

g. an accurate homemade passport

      h. any other information that might enhance your tour

      8. SCRAPBOOK (20 Points)

ÏCreate a SCRAPBOOK of materials/information on your chosen United Nations country

                        Scrapbooks must contain the following:

      a. Summary of Nation (2 typed pages)

      a) Geography

                  b) Culture

                  c) Government

                  d) Economy

            *include a Title Page and a Bibliography Page

            b. 3 News Articles about your chosen nation from the past year

                              (newspapers, magazines, etc..)  

*include a written, detailed description of each article

c. A handmade flag of your country (Use your imagination/Be creative!!!)

                  *ALSO, a picture of your country's flag.

d. A world map showing your nation in relation to the rest of the world, a regional map (continent), and an individual map of your country.

e. Complete and include the Information Organizer sheet provided by me.

f. Extra information to enhance the project. (Recipes, pictures, national anthem, items of cultural interest, etc…)

The Scrapbook must be organized in a hard cover binder
