GS II Projects


FALL 2008

As an essential part of this course you will prepare a portfolio of various items requiring independent research. These portfolio assignments will make up 20% of your class average. 

1. TERRORISM (10 Points)

find 1 NEWS ARTICLE from the past year about Terrorism in the World    

a.  read the article and prepare a hand-written, 50 – 75 word analysis of the article

b.  turn in a copy of the article with analysis attached at the end of the article

c.  be sure to include the source for the article

 

Hand-write a 1+ PAGE PAPER about a specific Terrorist or Terrorist Organization.

Include:

a.       specific, pertinent information about the person or group

b.       use lined paper (no fringes on the edge) and skip lines as you write

c.       be sure your writing is neat and legible (so I can read it!)

 

2. PERSONAL AD (10 Points)

Ïcreate a PERSONAL AD for a famous historical figure as it might appear on a site such as Cupid.com. Use Personal Ad format, NOT paragraph form! (Typed)

 Be sure to:

a.    assume the role of the Historical Figure

b.    include at least 5 accurate details about the person (name, D.O.B., hometown, do not count as details)

c.     include a small thumbnail picture of the person at the top of the personal ad

d.    approximately 100 - 150 words

        *Try to make this humorous, but remember to use accurate information

3. REFUGEES (10 Points)

 

            ÏHand write a 1+ page paper about Refugees.

 

Include:

a.       A general definition of Refugees

b.       choose a specific group of Refugees from the list below and describe their situation; such as:

1.       reasons for becoming Refugees

2.       numbers of Refugees

3.       where they seek asylum

4.       countries/organizations providing assistance, etc…

4. RESUME (10 Points)

 

Ïcreate a RESUME for an important historical figure. Be sure to assume the role of the person and prepare this in proper Resume format. (Typed)

 

Include:

a.       Objective (job applying for/historical importance of person)

b.       Education

c.       Work Experience

d.       Awards/Achievements

e.       Personal Interests

5. TOUR GUIDE (20 Points)

 

ÏDesign a TOUR of the religious, architectural, historical, and/or natural attractions of your selected country. This tour may be presented in a hard cover binder or in a Power Point.

 

Include the following:

 

a.   at least 1 accurate map of the country visited

b.   at least 1 accurate map for each of 2 cities visited

c.   a daily diary of places visited with a brief description of each

d.   a flight itinerary to and from the country

e.   names, pictures, descriptions of at least 2 hotels and 4 restaurants

f.    description of local norms, customs, and etiquette (Do’s and Don’ts)

g.   pictures of places visited and of the country in general

h.   a list of 10 helpful phrases in the country’s native language and with English translation

i.    any other information that might enhance your tour

6. SCRAPBOOK (20 Points)

 

ÏCreate a SCRAPBOOK of materials/information for your chosen country

                       

                                                Scrapbooks must contain the following:

 

a.  Summary of Nation (2 pages,typed)

a) Geography

                                    b) Culture

                                    c) Government

                                    d) Economy

                        *You must also include a Title Page and a Bibliography Page

           

           

                        b.  3 News Articles about your chosen nation from the past year

(newspapers, magazines, internet, etc..)

*include a typed, detailed description of each article (50-75 words)

 

c.  A handmade flag of your country (Use your imagination/Be creative!!!)

                                    *ALSO, a color picture of your country's flag.

 

d.  A world map showing your nation in relation to the rest of the world, a regional map (continent), and an individual map of your country.

(color in and label your country on world & regional maps)

 

 

e.  Complete and include the Information Organizer sheet provided by me.

 

 

f.  Extra information to enhance the project. (Recipes, pictures, national anthem, items of cultural interest, etc…)

 

 

 

The Scrapbook must be organized in a hard cover binder
